Playa El Palmar, San Carlos, Panama Oeste

Two neighbouring beaches… two completely different atmospheres

Sometimes it doesn’t take much to completely change the atmosphere. In San Carlos, that’s exactly what happens between Playa El Palmar and Playa La Ensenada.
Two beaches side by side.
Two totally different energies.
One attracts surfers, waves, black sand-covered boards and salty sunsets.
The other invites more calm, families, leisurely swims and long, slow days facing the Pacific.

And honestly… it’s this contrast that makes this part of Panamá Oeste so pleasant to live in.

📍 Where are Playa El Palmar and Playa La Ensenada?

📌 Precise location: San Carlos, Pacific coast of Panama
📍 Region: Panamá Oeste
🏡 Distance from Casa Fofo :

  • Playa La Ensenada: about 3 to 5 minutes’ walk
  • Playa El Palmar: about 5 to 8 minutes’ walk

The two beaches are very close to each other.
You can easily visit both in the same day. Just walk along the beach, and cross a small river to go from one beach to the other.
But once you’re there… you’ll quickly realize that they don’t have the same personality at all.

🌊 Playa El Palmar: the beach of surf and movement

Playa El Palmar is probably one of the region’s best-known surf beaches.
Here, the sand is darker. Volcanic. The Pacific appears more raw. More alive.
The waves arrive with regularity, especially during the green season, between May and October.
We come across :

  • surf schools,
  • barefoot travelers,
  • vans,
  • planks leaning against the palm trees,
  • open-air cafés facing the ocean,
  • and the slightly bohemian atmosphere that many people seek in Panama.

Even when you’re not surfing, there’s something very pleasant about this beach.
The sound of the waves. The wind. The constant movement of the water.

🏄 Why surfers love El Palmar so much

The waves are relatively constant. And best of all: they’re suitable for all levels. Beginners can take their first lessons. More advanced surfers will also find more technical areas, depending on the tides and swells.

The rainy season transforms the beach in particular. The Pacific becomes more powerful. Swells from the south sometimes bring very fine conditions.

And even for those who don’t surf… watching the silhouettes glide across the water at sunset is part of the show.

☕ A more touristy atmosphere… but still relaxed

El Palmar remains a tourist destination. But in a good way. You’ll find :

  • a few coffees,
  • simple restaurants,
  • small accommodations,
  • surf schools,
  • a few beach bars.

Nothing huge. Nothing excessively luxurious. And that’s probably what saves the place.

🌴 Playa La Ensenada: quieter, more family-friendly, gentler

Then there’s Playa La Ensenada. We have already described it in the article bearing its name.
There… the energy changes immediately. The sea often becomes calmer. The atmosphere slows down. You can hear families, children, birds… more than the powerful waves of the surf.
This is a beach where many Panamanians simply come to spend the day. Buy fish. To swim. Chatting under a ranchito.
Watching children play in the water.

🌅 Two beaches, two ways to experience the Pacific

That’s probably what we love most about this region.
In the morning, you can go and watch the waves at El Palmar.
Watch the surfers.
Then finish the afternoon at La Ensenada with a quiet swim and a simple picnic by the sea.

All this… just a few minutes away.

🌿 The green season completely changes the landscape

Between May and November, the region becomes extremely green.
The mountains around San Carlos are covered in mist. The sunsets are sometimes incredible. And the beaches change too:

  • El Palmar becomes more dynamic,
  • the waves are getting bigger,
  • surfing becomes even more interesting,
  • while La Ensenada often retains its quieter side.

Contrary to popular belief, the rainy season in Panama is not a permanent disaster. It often rains mostly at the end of the day, especially here in Arco Seco.

And the rest of the time… the landscape becomes almost tropical in excess. In the most beautiful sense of the word.

🐟 We recommend 2 surf schools

First of all: Panama Surf School in El Palmar at “Calle 4ta Sur”.
Here’s their information: here

And also: Popote The Surf Academy in El Palmar at “Calle Pelicano”.
