Coronado: The Convenient Heart of Panama’s Pacific Coast

When planning a trip to Panama’s Pacific coast, one name comes up again and again:
Coronado
Many travelers think it’s just a beach. In reality, Coronado is much more than that. It’s the true hub of the entire region west of Panama City. Whether you’re staying in San Carlos, El Valle de Antón, Gorgona, Punta Chame, Río Hato, or even at Casa Fofo, there’s a good chance you’ll end up in Coronado at some point.
People don’t just come here to enjoy the ocean. They also come to shop, have lunch at a good restaurant, see a doctor, withdraw cash, or simply soak up a bit of the city’s hustle and bustle before heading out again to explore the region’s natural treasures.
A story that dates back to the 1940s
The Coronado we know today was founded in 1941, when Roberto Eisenmann purchased a large waterfront property with a vision that was particularly innovative for its time: to create Panama’s first large residential beachfront community.
While most Panamanians spent their vacations in the countryside or in the mountains, Coronado was set to become a place where affluent families from Panama City could own a second home overlooking the ocean.
Over the decades, the project has continued to grow. Villas, hotels, golf courses, shops, and services have gradually sprung up, transforming Coronado into a veritable small town.
Even today, many Panamanians own vacation homes in Coronado, while thousands of expatriates from Canada, the United States, and Europe live there part of the year—or even spend their entire retirement there.
Coronado or Playa Coronado? A Common Confusion
Many visitors use both names as if they referred to the same place. However, there is an important difference.
When people talk about Coronado, they are usually referring to the entire commercial area along the Interamericana Highway.
In contrast, Playa Coronado refers to the private residential community located behind a large, secure entrance.
Inside, the streets are wide and lined with magnificent trees. There you’ll find beautiful villas, several residences with ocean views, swimming pools, tennis courts, golf courses, and direct access to the beach.
The atmosphere is calm, lush, and particularly pleasant.
A Paradise of Services
For residents throughout the region, Coronado is sort of like a local capital.
You can find just about everything you might need there:
- several supermarkets
- pharmacies
- banks and ATMs
- medical clinics, dentists
- veterinarians
- home improvement stores
- stores
- bakeries
- coffee shops
- many restaurants
- gas stations
- shopping centers
Whether you’re staying for a few days or several weeks, it’s almost impossible not to stop by Coronado at least once.
In fact, this is where we regularly do our own grocery shopping when we’re at Casa Fofo.
A vast beach with volcanic sand
Coronado Beach stretches for several kilometers.
Its black volcanic sand gives it a character quite different from the white-sand beaches people often imagine when they think of Panama.
At low tide, the beach becomes vast and offers a superb place for a stroll. The sunsets here are often magnificent, and photography enthusiasts will particularly appreciate the golden reflections on the damp sand.
Depending on the weather conditions, the waves can be quite strong. Swimming is still enjoyable, but it’s important to always exercise caution, especially when the sea is rough.
A popular destination among expats
For several years now, Coronado has attracted a large international community.
There are many North American retirees there, as well as Europeans drawn to the tropical climate, the cost of living, the proximity to Panama City, and the quality of the infrastructure.
This cultural diversity also explains the presence of numerous restaurants offering cuisines from around the world.
A great base for exploring the entire region
While Coronado is worth a visit, it’s not where the region’s most beautiful natural treasures are found.
In less than an hour, you can reach:
- the wild beaches of San Carlos
- the waves at El Palmar
- the mountains of El Valle de Antón
- the Chame Waterfalls
- Punta Chame
- Río Hato
- local markets
- many rivers where you can cool off
That is precisely what makes Coronado so appealing: having access to all modern amenities while remaining in close proximity to nature that is still largely unspoiled.
What we particularly appreciate
When we need to run some errands, stop by the pharmacy, or grab lunch at a restaurant, Coronado is almost always our destination.
You can find everything you need there without having to go all the way back to Panama City.
On the other hand, when we want to fully enjoy nature, wilder beaches, or places still relatively unknown to travelers, we quickly head back out to San Carlos and its surroundings.
It’s this combination, in fact, that makes our region so special.

A Few Things to Know
Like any popular destination, Coronado also has its limitations.
On weekends and during holidays, traffic can get heavy.
Prices are also a bit higher than in neighboring towns.
Finally, the atmosphere is more residential and international than typically Panamanian. Those looking to immerse themselves in local life will likely prefer to explore San Carlos, El Valle, or the small surrounding villages.
Our advice
For us, Coronado isn’t just a destination.
It’s the perfect balance between modern comfort and nature.
It has everything a traveler could need before setting out to explore the pristine beaches, waterfalls, mountains, and authentic villages that make this part of Panama so charming.
If you’re staying at Casa Fofo, there’s a good chance you’ll end up in Coronado. And you’ll quickly understand why everyone in the area always seems to end up there.
