Santa Clara and Farallón
🏖️ Two beaches, two different atmospheres on the Pacific Coast
Just a few kilometers from Casa Fofo, the Pacific Coast offers a string of beaches that are, however, quite different from one another.
After our little Playa La Ensenada—which is within walking distance of Casa Fofo—let’s head a little further west this time to explore Playa Santa Clara and Playa Farallón.
They are relatively close to each other, but their atmospheres aren’t quite the same.
Santa Clara retains a simple, family-friendly atmosphere, with its ranchos and small restaurants right on the beach.
Farallón, for its part, offers a striking contrast between the old fishing village—with its independent restaurants and beach bars—and the massive hotel complexes that have sprung up along part of its coastline.
Two beaches to explore during your stay with us—though not necessarily for the same reasons.

🌊 Playa Santa Clara: a large beach where you can simply enjoy the Pacific Ocean
From Casa Fofo, it takes about 25 to 30 minutes by car to get to Playa Santa Clara, depending on traffic.
The beach is long and wide, with sand that is relatively light in color for the Panamanian Pacific coast. Along the shore, you’ll find palm-leaf huts, hammocks, a few umbrellas, and several small establishments where you can eat or have a drink while looking out at the ocean.
The atmosphere is family-friendly, local, and laid-back.
On weekdays, Santa Clara can be very quiet. On weekends and Panamanian holidays, however, the scene changes: families arrive to spend the day at the beach, and the atmosphere becomes much livelier.
🍤 Where can you eat and have a drink in Santa Clara?
And that’s exactly one of the charms of Santa Clara: you don’t have to head back to the Pan-American Highway to eat.
🍹 Tortugas Beach Bar & Grill
Tortugas Beach Bar & Grill is located right on Playa Santa Clara and serves fish, seafood, ceviche, burgers, cocktails, and beer.
It also offers convenient amenities for spending part of the day there: parking, showers, and restrooms.
The venue also occasionally features live music and entertainment, especially during peak seasons. If that’s exactly what you’re looking for, be sure to check their schedule before you go.

🐟 Delights of the Sea
Another great local option: Delicias del Mar, also right on the beach.
People come here mainly for the Panamanian cuisine—fish and seafood, ceviche, patacones, and cold drinks. The place is simple and no-frills, and best of all, you can eat with your feet practically in the sand.

🌴 Las Veraneras
Las Veraneras is part of a small hotel, but unlike some of the larger resorts in the area, even people who aren’t staying there can enjoy the restaurant and the beach.
Day passes are available, which include access to restrooms and showers, as well as the option to rent a cabana.
This can be a good option if you want to spend several hours relaxing in Santa Clara.

💡 Good to know
Some designated access points, parking lots, beach huts, chairs, or facilities require a fee.
However, this does not mean that the beach is private. Panamanian beaches are public property, but a business may, of course, charge a fee for the use of its parking lot or facilities.

🏝️ Playa Farallón: a beach nestled between a small town and large resorts
Continue west for a few more minutes, and you’ll arrive at Playa Farallón.
From Casa Fofo, allow about 30 to 35 minutes by car, depending on traffic.
Farallón was originally a fishing village. Then large-scale tourism projects came along and profoundly transformed part of the area.
Today, this very long beach has two quite surprising sides.
On one side, the village and its small, independent establishments, where you can eat, have a cocktail, and spend the day at the beach.
On the other, the large apartment buildings and massive tourist resorts that occupy part of the coastline.
🏨 A public beach in front of private hotels
This is probably the most important point to understand before going to Farallón.
When you see some of the large hotel complexes built right on the oceanfront, you might easily think that part of Playa Farallón is private and reserved for hotel guests.
That’s not exactly the case.
The beach itself is public.
However, hotel grounds—including their swimming pools, gardens, lounge chairs, restaurants, and access paths—are private property. A hotel is therefore not required to allow you to cross its property simply because the beach behind it is public.
As a result, some parts of the coastline may seem as though they are privatized because they are much harder to reach from the road.
For a day trip to Farallón, the easiest option is to use the public access points on the village side.
And that’s actually great news, because that’s exactly where many of the nicest places to eat or have a drink are located.
🍹 Farallón on the village side: restaurants, cocktails, and music
This is probably the part of Farallón most worth exploring if you’re just spending the day there from Casa Fofo.
There are several restaurants and beach bars here that aren’t affiliated with the big resorts, located right on the beach or just a few meters from the water.
🌴 Pipa’s Beach
Pipa’s Beach is probably one of the best-known spots in Playa Farallón.
The restaurant and bar are located right on the Pacific coast. You can come just to eat, have a drink, or spend a few hours on the beach—without having to stay at a hotel.
Fish, seafood, Panamanian cuisine, cocktails, and beer are on the menu.
Pipa’s also occasionally features live music and entertainment, making it a great spot if you’re looking for a beach with a bit more energy.

🍸 AMAR By La Playa Farallón
AMAR By La Playa Farallón offers a different vibe, with cuisine inspired by Peru, featuring fish, seafood, and cocktails.
It’s a particularly pleasant spot to enjoy the beach and then stay for a drink in the late afternoon.

🍕 Mia Beach, Panama
Want a break from fried fish and ceviche?
Mia Beach Panama offers pizza, Italian cuisine, ice cream, cocktails, and beer right on Playa Farallón.
Beach huts are available on the beach, and the venue occasionally features live music.

🍤 Coko Blue
Coko Blue is another beachfront spot where you can enjoy fish, seafood, and tapas—or just stop by for a cocktail while looking out at the ocean.

🎶 Nico’s Beach
Finally, Nico’s Beach is also located right in the Playa Farallón area.
The establishment offers local and international cuisine, fish, seafood, drinks, and cocktails.
It also has a few lodging options, but the restaurant is open to outside visitors, which is exactly what we’re interested in here.
Live music and entertainment are also offered from time to time.

💃 So, can we party in Santa Clara or Farallón?
Yes… but with one small caveat.
We’re not in Ibiza. 😄
There is indeed live music, DJs, and various entertainment options, especially around Farallón and particularly on weekends, holidays, and during vacation periods.
But the schedules change regularly.
In Farallón, Pipa’s Beach, Mia Beach, Nico’s Beach, and Coko Blue are among the spots to check out if you’re looking for a lively musical atmosphere.
In Santa Clara, Tortugas Beach Bar & Grill may also offer entertainment.
So it’s best to check their social media or contact them the same day or the day before.
Because in Panama, a party might pop up on Instagram on Friday afternoon for Saturday night. 😂
🏡 From Casa Fofo
One of the benefits of staying at Casa Fofo in San Carlos, is precisely that you can explore several very different beaches without changing accommodations.
Playa La Ensenada is about 200 meters from the house, El Palmar and its surfers are just a few minutes away, and Santa Clara and Farallón are further west.
In just a few days, you can experience the many different facets of Panama’s Pacific coast: a small local beach, a surf spot, a large family-friendly beach, restaurants right on the sand, or a much more developed tourist area.
