Hikes and Adventures Around San Carlos and Chame

When people think of Panamá Oeste, they often picture the long Pacific beaches. Yet, just a few kilometers from Casa Fofo, the mountains, rivers, and mangroves reveal a completely different side of the region.
Whether you’re a hiking enthusiast, love swimming in nature, or are simply looking for spectacular scenery, these four sites are worth adding to your itinerary.

⛰️ Cerro Picacho: the most beautiful viewpoint overlooking Laguna de San Carlos

Just a few minutes from Laguna de San Carlos, Cerro Picacho rises to an altitude of over 1,000 meters. Contrary to what its name might suggest, this hike is relatively short, but it climbs almost continuously.
The effort is well worth it. Once at the summit, the view is spectacular: Laguna de San Carlos stretches out at the foot of the mountain, while on a clear day, the view extends all the way to the Pacific Ocean, Coronado, and the Altos de María mountains.
The trail is well-marked and does not require a guide. However, sturdy shoes are highly recommended, especially during the rainy season when the ground quickly becomes slippery.

🏔️ Cerro Chame: a 360° view of West Panama

If you had to choose just one major hike in the region, many enthusiasts would answer without hesitation: Cerro Chame.
This mountain overlooks the entire coast of Panamá Oeste and offers one of the most beautiful panoramic views in the region.
The first part of the hike winds through a pleasant forest that provides shelter from the sun. Then, gradually, the vegetation gives way to an open ridge where you hike with the ocean as a backdrop.
At the summit, the view is breathtaking. On one side, the beaches and Punta Chame. On the other, the Campana Mountains and the mangroves of Chame Bay.
It’s also a very popular spot for watching the sunrise.

Los Cajones de Chame: A Hidden Natural Pool

After exploring the peaks, it’s time to cool off.
Los Cajones de Chame is a canyon carved out by the Chame River over the centuries. The water has sculpted impressive rock walls and created several natural pools where you can swim when conditions are right.
The area remains relatively unspoiled, which gives it a special charm.
However, visiting after heavy rains is strongly discouraged, as the river level can rise very quickly.

Altos de Campana National Park: The Rainforest Right at Your Fingertips

Established in 1966 as Panama’s first national park, Altos de Campana National Park is a true natural haven. Perched at an elevation of between 850 and 1,000 meters, it offers a cooler climate than the coast, making it an ideal destination for a day trip.
The park is home to a tropical mountain forest where giant ferns, mosses, orchids, and century-old trees create an almost mystical atmosphere. At every turn along the trails, you’ll discover lush vegetation, accompanied by birdsong and the rustling of the wind through the canopy.
Several marked trails allow visitors to explore the park according to their fitness level and the time they have available. Some can be completed in less than an hour, while others offer a more challenging hike. All provide a wonderful immersion in one of the most beautiful protected natural areas in Panamá Oeste.
One of the highlights of the visit is undoubtedly the magnificent panoramic views of Chame Bay, Punta Chame, and—on a clear day—the Pacific Ocean. Photography enthusiasts will find superb vantage points here.
Don’t miss the famous Campana Cross—Cerro la Cruz, one of the park’s iconic landmarks. Easily accessible, it’s a must-see stop to admire the scenery and capture your visit.
The park is also a true paradise for nature lovers. More than 250 species of birds have been recorded there, along with a wide variety of butterflies, amphibians, and tropical plants. With a little luck, you might spot a toucan or hear the cry of a howler monkey echoing through the forest.
