A village built inside a volcano
It’s often said that El Valle is situated inside a volcano.
That’s true… but the story is even more fascinating.
Several hundred thousand years ago, a gigantic volcano towered over this region. After a series of eruptions, its summit collapsed, forming a massive caldera about six kilometers in diameter. Over time, nature transformed this crater into a fertile valley where the village we know today developed.
When you look up, the mountains surrounding El Valle are actually the ancient walls of the volcano.
Few places in the world allow you to live… inside an extinct volcano.

Thanks to its elevation of about 600 meters, El Valle has a much cooler climate than San Carlos or Coronado.
A Unique Atmosphere in Panama
Unlike many tourist destinations, El Valle hasn’t lost its soul.
Locals still get around by bike, small cafés sit alongside flower-filled gardens, and you’ll run into just as many Panamanians spending the weekend here as you will foreign travelers.
The village invites you to take your time.
You stroll, admire the flowers, stop for a coffee, then leisurely set off again toward a new discovery.
It’s probably this laid-back lifestyle that gives El Valle its charm.
🛍️ The Artisan Market
You can’t visit El Valle without stopping by its famous market.
There you’ll find items made by Panamanian artisans:
- woven baskets;
- wooden sculptures;
- jewelry;
- hammocks;
- molas kuna;
- handcrafted soaps;
- Panamanian coffee;
- local honey;
- jams;
- flowers and plants.
The market is also a great place to pick up a few souvenirs while supporting local artisans.
Right next door, the fruit and vegetable market is also worth a quick stop. The stalls are overflowing with tropical fruits that European visitors may not be familiar with.

The best times to visit are in the morning and on weekdays. On weekends, the atmosphere is very lively.

🦋 Butterfly Haven
It takes just a few minutes to leave the hustle and bustle of the market behind and step into a true tropical garden.
El Mariposario / Butterfly Heaven is home to several species of Panamanian butterflies that flit freely around visitors.
Observing their life cycle—from caterpillar to adult butterfly—is particularly fascinating for both children and adults.
The garden also features several species of plants on which these magnificent insects depend.

🐍 The Serpentarium
Panama is home to more than 140 species of snakes. Fortunately, only a small fraction of them are venomous.
The El Valle Serpentarium offers a great opportunity to learn more about them.
There, visitors can discover local species, their role in the ecosystem, and the work being done to produce the antivenoms used in Panamanian hospitals.
The visit often helps visitors overcome certain fears and gain a better understanding of these often-misunderstood animals.

The tour is relatively short, so it’s easy to combine it with Butterfly Heaven.
🐍 El Serpentario
♨️ Hot Springs
After exploring the village, what could be more pleasant than a moment of relaxation?
The Pozos Termales are known for their naturally warm waters and volcanic mud baths.
Many visitors start by applying a thin layer of clay to their skin and letting it dry for a few minutes. They then rinse off in the showers provided for this purpose and head into the thermal pools. You’ll come out with skin as soft as a baby’s!
It’s still a fun experience and is one of El Valle’s traditions.

Be sure to bring a swimsuit, a towel… and clothes that can handle a few splashes of clay!
My little piece of advice
I especially love El Valle because it offers a striking contrast to the coast. In just under an hour from Casa Fofo, you go from the Pacific beaches to a lush valley where the air is cooler and the pace is much more peaceful.
For your first visit, I recommend simply strolling through the village, soaking up the atmosphere, and checking out a few of its must-see spots. The hikes, waterfalls, and spectacular views… we’ll save those for our next article dedicated to El Valle de Antón (2/2).
