Others are mainly about meeting people and experiencing a different way of life in Panama.

A day in an Emberá community clearly falls into the second category.

The Emberá are one of Panama’s indigenous peoples. Their history is closely tied to the rivers and rainforests of the Darién, but several communities have also settled further west, particularly in the Río Chagres, Lake Alajuela, and Lake Gatún basins.

Some of them now welcome visitors and offer to share aspects of their culture, crafts, and environment.

From Casa Fofo, you’ll need to set aside a full day for the trip. You’ll leave the Pacific Coast early, cross a good portion of the country… and then, depending on which community you choose, the road eventually gives way to the river.

And that’s usually when the magic begins. 🌿🛶

🌎 Who are the Emberá?

The Emberá people live primarily in Panama and Colombia, particularly in the large historical region of Chocó and Darién.

In Panama, their communities gradually spread out across different regions, with some remaining deeply connected to the Darién, while others settled in the Canal Zone and along the Chagres River.

The Darién remains one of the major historical territories of the Emberá in Panama. As a result, there are now several villages that are relatively accessible from Panama City, particularly around Chagres National Park.

🛶 The River as a Path

To understand Emberá culture, you have to look at a map… and then forget about the roads for a moment.

Traditionally, rivers have served as major transportation routes. They provide access to villages, allow people to fish, transport crops, engage in trade, and maintain ties between communities.

In some forested regions, a canoe simply makes much more sense than a car.
That’s also what makes the visit so special.

After about a two-hour drive from San Carlos, you usually arrive at a dock or meeting point. Then you board a piragua, a long dugout canoe that is now most often equipped with a motor.

Little by little, the roads fade away. The forest closes in around the river, and the sound of the engine blends with the sound of the water.
The journey is already part of the encounter.

<div
