In our first article on El Valle de Anton (Part 1 of 2)<\/a>, we focused on the heart of the village: its market, its butterflies, its serpentarium, and its hot springs.But El Valle has another side to it.You only have to look up at the mountains surrounding the village to realize that the adventure begins just beyond the first few houses. Trails through the rainforest, waterfalls, rivers, natural pools, and zip lines are hidden on the slopes of this immense ancient crater. And since then Casa Fofo<\/a><\/strong>, there\u2019s no need to plan a multi-day trip: El Valle de Ant\u00f3n is about a 45-minute drive away<\/strong>. That means you can leave the beach in the morning and find yourself, shortly afterward, in the middle of a mountain forest. \ud83c\udf3f<\/p>\n\n

\ud83e\udd7e<\/strong> La India Dormida, El Valle\u2019s iconic hike<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n

It’s impossible to talk about nature in El Valle without starting with her.To the west of the village, the mountain range forms a striking silhouette: that of a reclining woman, her face turned toward the sky. This is the famous India Dormida<\/strong>, \u201cthe Sleeping Indian.\u201d <\/p>\n\n

According to legend, Luba<\/strong>\u2014also known as Flor del Aire<\/em>\u2014was the daughter of the cacique Urrac\u00e1<\/strong>. A young and brave warrior from her people, Yarav\u00ed<\/strong>, was in love with her, and according to some versions of the story, Luba was meant to be his. But the young woman did not share his feelings.Her heart belonged to another: a pale-faced Spanish warrior<\/strong> who had arrived in these lands with the conquistadors. It was an impossible love, since the Spaniards were then the enemies of her people. Torn between her feelings and her loyalty to her people, Luba ultimately chose to renounce this love.Desperate at his inability to win Luba\u2019s heart, Yarav\u00ed is said to have thrown himself off the top of a mountain. Luba, also overcome with grief, wandered through the mountains before dying there.Nature is said to have then covered her body and shaped the mountain into the form of the sleeping young woman. From El Valle de Ant\u00f3n<\/strong>, one can make out her forehead, her face, her chest, and the rest of her outstretched body along the ridge. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n

And so was born *La India Dormida*<\/strong>, a Panamanian legend that weaves together impossible love, sacrifice, and loyalty to one\u2019s people\u2014a legend whose memory still seems to linger over the valley.Today, it is primarily one of Panama\u2019s most famous hikes.The trail starts in the La Piedra Pintada<\/strong> area, famous for its enormous rock covered with pre-Columbian petroglyphs. It then winds through the vegetation, follows streams, and gradually climbs toward the ridges. <\/p>\n

Once you reach the top, the landscape changes completely: the forest thins out in places, revealing the entire El Valle basin.And it\u2019s probably here that you can best appreciate its unique geography: the entire village lies within an ancient volcanic caldera<\/strong>, surrounded by mountains.Depending on the route you take and your pace, allow several hours to fully enjoy the hike. The locally described trails are about 6 km<\/strong> long and are generally rated as moderate in difficulty. The terrain includes rocks, uneven sections, and areas that can become very slippery when it rains. <\/p>\n\n

Set out early. It will be cooler, and you\u2019ll have more time ahead of you. Wear proper hiking shoes, bring plenty of water, and avoid the ridges when the weather turns bad. During the dry season, the wind can also be very strong at the summit. <\/p>\n\n

\ud83d\udca6<\/strong> Chorro El Macho, the great waterfall of El Valle<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n

After the hills, back under the trees.Just a few minutes from downtown is one of El Valle\u2019s most famous natural sites: Chorro El Macho<\/strong>.The waterfall plunges into the heart of particularly dense tropical vegetation. With a reported drop of about 70 meters<\/strong>, it is the largest waterfall in the area. But here, you don’t have to be an experienced hiker.From the entrance, a small, well-maintained trail winds through the forest, and several footbridges allow visitors to make their way through the vegetation. The walk is short and accessible to a much wider audience than the India Dormida trail. So it\u2019s a great option for families or simply for anyone who wants to explore the El Valle Forest without turning the day into a hike.And the atmosphere is very different: humidity, ferns, tall trees, the sound of water\u2026 It has that almost lush quality you imagine when you think of a Panamanian rainforest.The site is generally open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.<\/strong>, with an admission fee of about $5 per adult<\/strong>. A natural swimming area is also available when conditions permit. <\/p>\n\n

During the rainy season, the waterfall\u2019s flow becomes much more impressive\u2026 but swimming may be restricted if the water level rises too high. Be sure to bring insect repellent, too: in this humid vegetation, the little jejenes<\/em> also enjoy El Valle. \ud83d\ude05 <\/p>\n\n

For those who find that a leisurely walk under the trees is a little too tame, El Valle offers another option.Canopy Adventure<\/em><\/strong> offers the chance to zip-line through the rainforest.And not just anywhere.The course is located in the Chorro El Macho area, and some lines run over the forest and the waterfall<\/strong>.After a walk through the vegetation to reach the first platforms, we put on a helmet and a harness\u2026 and then all that\u2019s left to do is take the plunge.The full course includes four zip lines<\/strong> and takes about 2 to 3 hours<\/strong> to complete. The price currently listed by the operator is $65 per person<\/strong>, including taxes. For the zipline, it’s best to make a reservation in advance, especially on weekends. The activity also depends on weather conditions and may be suspended in the event of a thunderstorm or strong winds. <\/p>\n\n

Good news: You don’t have to hang from a cable above the forest to enjoy Canopy Adventure! \ud83d\ude04From the entrance, you can also take the Sendero Chorro El Macho, a lovely little trail that winds through the rainforest, crosses small suspension bridges, and follows the river. The loop is short and perfect for those who simply want to enjoy nature. And most importantly, don’t forget your swimsuit!The site also features a natural pool fed by the waters of the R\u00edo Amarillo, nestled amid the vegetation. The water is around 24 \u00b0C\u2014just right for turning that first dip into a little moment of tropical bravery. \ud83d\ude02So you can definitely visit Canopy Adventure without going on a zip line\u2014just to take a walk through the forest and end the outing with a swim.There is even a longer, guided version of the trail\u2014about 3 km long and taking about 2 hours\u2014that takes you deeper into the forest and past the back of the waterfall before reaching the natural pool.<\/p>\n\n
