Recycling remains limited. And, at times, this can give the impression that nothing is really organized.  <br \/>For many travelers and expatriates, it&#8217;s a real culture shock. And let&#8217;s be honest: yes, Panama is still lagging behind in this area.<br \/>But living here also reveals a more nuanced reality. Because behind this sometimes discouraging initial observation&#8230; something is slowly beginning to change.<br \/>The country is not standing still.  <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-nbsp-pourquoi-le-recyclage-est-encore-complique-au-panama\"><strong>\u267b\ufe0f<\/strong><strong> Why recycling is still complicated in Panama<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Panama is a young country in terms of development.  <br \/>In recent decades, the main priorities have been :<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>the economy,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>infrastructure,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>tourism,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>and the country&#8217;s rapid growth.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Environmental issues came later.<br \/>Unlike some European countries where sorting has long been part of daily life, here the infrastructure is still limited:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>few collection points,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>lack of awareness,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>high plastic consumption,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>and systems that, depending on the region, are still underdeveloped.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In some rural areas, there are simply no practical solutions for recycling.<br \/><br \/>Result: some waste ends up in landfill&#8230; or sometimes burnt.<br \/>And when you love nature, it can be hard to see that in such a beautiful country.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-nbsp-un-contraste-qui-peut-surprendre\"><strong>\ud83c\udf34<\/strong><strong> A surprising contrast<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is probably the most striking thing about Panama.<br \/>On the one hand :<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>a lush jungle,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>beautiful beaches,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>mango trees,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>flowers all year round,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>monkeys, sloths, iguanas&#8230;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And on the other:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>plastic,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>visible waste,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>and still imperfect management.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The contrast is sometimes striking.<br \/>You can be driving through an absolutely sublime landscape&#8230; then suddenly see garbage on the side of a road or a river.<br \/>And that inevitably raises questions.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-nbsp-pourtant-les-choses-commencent-doucement-a-changer\"><strong>\ud83c\udf31<\/strong><strong> Yet&#8230; things are slowly beginning to change<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But to reduce Panama to just that would also be unfair. Because when you live here longer, you also discover something else: people who are trying to change things. <br \/><br \/>Little by little, initiatives are appearing.<br \/>We now see :<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>collection points,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>awareness campaigns,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>schools that are starting to talk about ecology,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>companies that recover certain materials,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>and local communities trying to implement solutions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s not yet comparable to Europe. But it&#8217;s not non-existent either. And this nuance is important.  <\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-nbsp-recimetal-une-entreprise-qui-fait-bouger-les-choses\"><strong>\ud83c\udfed <span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Recimetal<\/span>: a company that makes things happen<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.recimetal-sa.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Recimetal Panam\u00e1<\/a> is one of the companies involved in this development.<br \/><br \/>For more than twenty years, this Panamanian company has been working in :<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>collection,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>recovery,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>treatment,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>and recovery of recyclable materials.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their goal is simple:<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p><em>transforming certain types of waste into reusable resources.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In particular, the company recovers :<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>metals,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>aluminum,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>cardboard,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>plastic,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>batteries,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>and electronic equipment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But what&#8217;s interesting is that their job isn&#8217;t just to &#8220;collect garbage&#8221;.<br \/><br \/>They also participate in :<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>educational campaigns,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>environmental programs,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>local collaborations,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>and awareness campaigns.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Little by little, an ecological conscience seems to be emerging.<\/p>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-jetpack-slideshow aligncenter\" priorities sometimes very different from those of Europe.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For a long time, ecology was simply not a priority.<br \/>But today, this seems to be slowly changing.<br \/>Younger generations in particular seem increasingly sensitive:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>pollution,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>to protecting the oceans,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>and nature conservation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br \/>Slowly, of course.<br \/>But really.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-nbsp-a-notre-petite-echelle-aussi\"><strong>\u267b\ufe0f<\/strong><strong> In our small way too&#8230;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For our part, at <a plastics at collection points where possible.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s not always as simple or as organized as in Europe, but we&#8217;re trying, in our small way, rather than just shortcomings.<br \/><br \/>And in Panama, despite the obvious difficulties, you get the feeling that part of the country is sincerely trying to move forward.<br \/>Recycling remains one of Panama&#8217;s major challenges for the years to come.<br \/><br \/>But contrary to certain preconceived ideas, it would be wrong to say that nothing exists or that nobody is concerned about it.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-nbsp-conclusion\"><strong>\ud83c\udf0a<\/strong><strong> Conclusion<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Living in Panama means accepting a balance.<br \/>What&#8217;s in it for you?<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>a softer quality of life,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>incredible nature,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>an exceptional climate,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>and a real sense of freedom.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But it also means :<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>adaptation,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>patience,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>and sometimes a more nuanced look at certain local realities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recycling is one of those realities.<br \/>It&#8217;s not perfect yet.<br \/><br \/>But for the first time in a long time&#8230; we feel that change is really starting to
